Australia is a relatively young country and was settled largely by convicts (although there were already Indigenous Australians living here). There have been many events led by various people over the last 200 years or so that have made Australia the country it is today. It is important for students to know the history of their own country, this will help them to feel a part of this country and have a willingness to make it a greater country in the future.
This unit will focus on some of the persons who have made this country what it is today, it is written for a year 5 cohorts. Students will investigate some important Australians and their contributions and then choose two of these Australians to be placed on the $200 note that they will create themselves.
The unit is written to encompass two key learning areas and relates to the time, continuity and change strand in the SOSE essential learnings and constructing texts within the English essential learnings.
The process of researching to create a new note for Australian currency will teach students research skills, justification of decisions based on evidence gathered and reflections skills within the real world context of Australian currency that they interact with regularly.
This unit aims to incorporate the Teaching Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) learning framework. This framework aims to integrate technology into teaching, not just simply add technology to the lessons. The learning manage must recognize that pedagogical and content knowledge must work together in order for teaching to be effective. Technology is at the forefront of today’s education and has been incorporated into this unit of work. There are a variety of technologies that have been suggested to support and enhance this unit however the learning manager can add or change any one of these technologies in order to ensure that the unit of work is accessible and beneficial for all their students. TPACK aims to incorporate pedagogy, content and technology in order for students to achieve success in learning, this unit aims to do this also.
